This is the Blog for my 20-week Block Chemistry Class for the two-quarter, fall block class during the 2015-16 school year at George Washington High School.

2-5-16: Continued Free Range Chemistry to completion or made up missing work. Students complete course evaluations for extra credit.

2-4-16: I read some sample Haikus submitted by students and we continued with the "Free Range Chemistry video (I switched to the segmented version (on auto run) because Dr. Wother's slides were better presented. We began with limestone and proceeded through _. I also demonstrated a reaction of Ammonia with hydrochloric acid and displayed copper crystals precipitated in a test tube ecosystem.

2-3-16: Students used the time to make up missing work or earn extra credit by writing items on a reference sheet from watching "Free Range Chemistry" (See Item #37 on the references tab). For additional EC, see item #48 on the EC tab on the left (students can submit up to 5 Haiku poems for 1 point each as directed).

2-2-16: Students took the Final exam. It will count for 20% of the term 2 grade.

2-1-16: In handed out a worksheet containing descriptions of 30 chemical reactions (15 equations and 15 word descriptions). Students classified each of the equations and we balanced a few of them. The Final exam, counting as 20% of the term grade, is tomorrow.

1-29-16: Students were asked to begin CRWS 8.2. We introduced balancing equations, spoke of Fritz Haber along with the synthesis reaction of Ammonia. Students learned the mole concept. We also visited the PhET website to balance equations and saw the decomposition of water using electrolysis. Students took notes on the general format of 5 classifications of reactions.

1-28-16: I repeated the lesson from 1-22 as my computer was not available for the class period. I was able to post the answers. Students were to quiz themselves and check/correct their answers.

1-27-16: We reviewed CRWS 8.1 #1-11 discussing overall and net reactions using the thermite demonstration from Friday as an example.

1-25/26-16: No school due to snow days

1-22-16: Students were asked to prepare for the Final exam and complete/submit the quiz from yesterday. Answers to the the "standardized test prep" multiple choice questions at the end of chapters 1-6 and 8 were posted; these are:
Page 35: CCDAD BCCAB, 71: BCDCB CABBAB B, 113: BDCAB ACCDB D, 155: CBAAA DCCAB D, 187: DBCDC DACBC DA, 221: AACCB CDABD BC, 299: DBBBB AAABA DD I demonstrated the thermite reaction, another single displacement reaction involving aluminum and iron.

1-21-16: Students were provided with a reference sheet for chapter 8 (CRWS 8.1 and 8.2). Students were asked to solve CRWS 8.1 #1-3. We examined and classified two chemical reactions (The decomposition of water and the displacement of Copper with Aluminum using an aqueous solution of copper(II) chloride). I then handed out a quiz for chapter 6 which I allowed students to finish as a take home due tomorrow.

1-20-16: Students learned how to name covalent compounds using a system of prefixes as discussed on p206. Students were asked to write the prefixes for 1-10 from page 832 and complete the problems #15-25 from CRWS 6.2. We also solved #50 on text page 218 to complete our student of chapter 6. The package should be completed for HW. Key terms for chapter 8 will be due by Monday. There will be a quiz on chapter 6 tomorrow.

1-19-16: We watched a khan academy video covering resonance structures then wrote the Lewis structures for NO2-, N2F2, NO2F, and the sulfite ion. Students are encouraged to write the structures for SO2 and SO3 molecules. Studedents are to complete the CRWS pack for chapter 6 for HW (6.2#15-25 will be done in class tomorrow). Key terms for chapter 8 were assigned for HW.

1-15-16: We reviewed the HW and also drew structures for the resonating molecule of ozone discussed on page 206. We watched a video from Khan academy: that offered additional methodology in drawing molecules. Students are encouraged to explore Khan academy for help with any high school subject topics (see link on home page). We did not cover the do-now of drawing NO2- or N2F2 which I now plant to cover after the long weekend.

1-14-16: We continued the lessons from 1/5 that had been suspended due to keystone exams. Students drew Lewis structures for single bonded molecules and polyatomic ions like those on page 202 and 203. We reviewed double and triple bonds and I drew molecules for H2, O2, and N2. For HW students are to draw structures for CO and CO2.

1-13-16: I began to introduce stoichiometry and chemical reactions (Chapters 7-9) by conducting a demonstration of magnesium flash powder. We wrote the equation, balanced it, converted to weight ratios, then performed the reaction.

1-12-16: We completed the Atomic Cafe. Students submitted the WS for extra credit.

1-11-16: With the shorter schedule from Keystone Testing and reduced attendance, we did not continue with the chemistry curriculum but rather continued with "The Atomic Cafe". to 43:00. Transpasses were distributed and the midterm/Final Schedule was posted.

1-8-16: With the shorter schedule from Keystone Testing and reduced attendance, we did not continue with the chemistry curriculum but rather a Tom Lehrer song ("Who's Next") related to nuclear proliferation and continued with "The Atomic Cafe". to 21:00.

1-7-16: With the shorter schedule from Keystone Testing and reduced attendance, we did not continue with the chemistry curriculum but skip "Home" from yesterday and watch "The Atomic Cafe". We got to about 6:00..

1-5-16: Students were asked to solve CRWS 6.2 #1-7 which we reviewed. We then began to learn how to draw Lewis Structures for single bonded molecules covering #8 and a few others (like H2 and AsF3)

1-4-15: Students were asked to complete CRWS 6.1 #10-18. We reviewed and continued with #19-22. Students were given a grade for completion of #10-23 (#23 they did on their own).

12-23-15: We completed the video and saw a heat shield demonstration.

12-22-15: We continued Apollo 13 and will complete the viewing tomorrow.

12-21-15: We discussed the Apollo Program, the fire on Apollo 1, and began watching the film "Apollo 13". Students are permitted to make up missing work during the next three days or watch the film and submit the video worksheet for extra credit.

12-18-15: Fewer students and less class time today due to half day schedule. Rather than proceed with new topics, we played Kahoot to enhance general knowledge.

12-17-15: We continued discussing the covalent bond covering CRWS 6.1 #1-8. Students took a quiz on chapter 5 then we reviewed the quiz before the period ended.

12-16-15: Students were given the reference sheet pack for chapter 6. We discussed types of bonds and reviewed CRWS 6.1 #1-6. A quiz covering chapter 5 will be given tomorrow.

12-15-15: We reviewed the remainder of CRWS 5.3 (#34-51). There will be a quiz tomorrow after which time we will begin chapter 6. We saw two reaction demonstrations: 1) Potassium Permanganate and Glycerin, and 2) The gummy bear torture (Potassium PerChlorate and Sugar). For extra credit, students can submit the chemical reaction equations for these demonstrations.

12-14-15: We reviewed the HW and P180 #5-8.

12-11-15: Students were required (for grade) to label the ions listed on the "Common Ion Table" as "P" for polyatomic or "S" for simple. We reviewed this in class. Students are to complete parts A & B on the constructed response titled "Formulas for Ionic Compounds". This was worksheet #1 from the substitute last week. Many did not understand the work at that time.

12-10-15: I reviewed some of the problems on the worksheets provided by the substitute covering naming and writing formulas for ionic compounds. Students are to continue to complete those sheets.

12-3 to 12-9/15: Students followed plans left with a substitute as I was bereaving the death of my mother. I will return 12/10 and review the progress made in my absence.

12-2-15: We discussed more of CRWS 5.1 (#9-13) going over many of the topics covered by those questions.

12-1-15: I checked the HW and gave credit to those who completed it on time or those who finished #16-31 by the end of class discussions. We discussed how to write names and formulas for simple binary ionic compounds including ions formed from elements in the D block. For HW, students are to complete CRWS 5.3 #1-15

11-30-15: Students received the "Yellow Periodic Table" containing additional data tables used for chapters 5-8. Students worked on, then we reviewed CRWS 5.1 #1-8 and CRWS 5.3 #1-8. For HW, Students are to Solve CRWS 5.3 #16-21

11-25-15: We watched a video tour of the international space station (25 minute version) and discussed items from it. This video can be found as item 49 on the reference tab on the left.

11-24-15: We distinguished between ionic compounds and covalent molecules. Student were given a sheet listing the 5 properties of ionic compounds. I demonstrated each of them after discussion.

11-23-15: A reference pack was handed out covering chapter 5. I checked the HW (24 Key term definitions for chapters 5 & 6). We watched video #8 in the World of Chemistry Series (See Item 3 on Reference links) and students submitted a worksheet on the video as part of their grade. We examined salt crystals to observe their cubic structure.

11-20-15: Students took the chapter 4 exam and also received credit for having the chapter 4 reference pack complete. The puzzle sheet from Wednesday shall count as extra credit.

11-19-15: Students reviewed for the exam tomorrow and took a quiz on the groups in the periodic table. Students received two extra credit essays for the unit. Key term definitions for chapters 5 and 6 are due Monday.

11-18-15: Students received a word puzzle covering key terms for topics covered to date.

11-17-15: Students watched "The Periodic Table" from the world of chemistry series (See item 3 - References Tab) and handed in the worksheet for credit toward grade. Students performed the Mendeleev Lab of 1869 and submitted the lab sheet as credit toward their grade. The chapter 4 exam is postponed to Friday. As a makeup assignment to the Mendeleev lab, students can submit Assignment #47 from the Assignments/EC tab on the left.

11-16-15: We reviewed chapter 4 topics. I announced the exam for Thursday. Key terms for chapter 5 and 6 are due after the exam. We completed the video, "The Hidden Order".

11-13-15: We continued our study of the periodic table and watched, nearly to conclusion, "The Hidden Order".

11-12-15: We continued our discussion of periodic table trends. Students received a constructed response paper titled "Periodic Table Trends" which we completed in class. Students also assembled their in-class portfolio folders with a summary page then filed today's work into it for credit toward their 2nd term grade.

11-11-15: No school due to the Veteran's Day holiday.

11-10-15: We began a discussion of property trends on the periodic table. Students were asked to consider the trends illustration detailed in section 4.3 of their textbook. We discussed how atomic size influences Ionization energy and the other properties illustrated. We discussed the trend of melting point and boiling at the end of that chapter. We continued the video from yesterday almost to its conclusion. Students are asked to complete the chapter 4 reference sheet pack for homework, due Friday.

11-9-15: Students are asked to complete CRWS 4.2. We reviewed #22-25, the last four on the sheet. We watched the 13 minute video "Ferocious Elements" as a way of introducing atomic trends. We then continued with "The Hidden Order", a video hosted by Professor Jim Al-Khalili. This video is linked on Item #81 on the reference tab on the left.

11-6-15: We covered CRWS 4.1. Students are to begin CRWS 4.2.

11-5-15: Students completed the Bil Nye Video and submitted the completed worksheet for the final grade on this video. Any student who did not submit the sheet has until tomorrow to watch the video on their own (See yesterday's blog for link information) and submit the sheet. Absent students have until Monday. We discussed plastics from the video and students saw the network of ash form after the combustion of a ping pong ball. We also discussed the space elevator program,a potential application of "Fullerenes" presented in the last section of the video.

11-4-15: Students received the reference sheet pack for chapter 4. They were asked to research and then we reviewed CRWS 4.1 #1-10 covering the historical development of the periodic table. We continued the Bill Nye video, watching the next section on Radioactivity. I collected the worksheets for partial credit on having taken notes on the video so far. Upon completion of the video, the entire worksheet will be due - I will hand them back for completion. Students who have not watched the video can find a link for it as Item 27 through the reference tab on the left.

11-3-15: No class due to election day

11-2-15: Students used the text to solve p122 #2,3,4, covering the work of Newlands, Medeleev, and Mosley. In additions discussed the contributions to periodic development of Seaborg and Dobereiner. I showed the reaction of Sodium metal.

10-30-15: We continued watching the Bill Nye Video through up to "Radioactivity. I checked the chapter 4 key terms for credit toward grade.

10-29-15: In my absence, students received an essay on the life of Alfred Nobel, chemical engineer, and creator of the prize that bears his name. Students were required to complete four questions of the essay sheet and one additional question on a half sheet. Students were required to complete these writing during class time and submit the two sheets (stapled together) it as they leave the room in order to receive full credit.

10-28-15: We discussed the group 11 elements and began to discuss how the periodic table organizes elements according their properties. Students observed calcium metal, discussed calcium's presence in our lives, and witnessed a demonstration of the instability of calcium metal when mixed with water. We also discussed the properties of metals as we learned that metals appear in all but the right side of the periodic table.

10-27-15: Students took the the chapter 3 exam and were given and extra credit puzzle due Monday. During the exam I gave HW credit to those who showed a complete set of reference papers (Two stapled packs complete with isotope tables, marked up periodic tables, electron configurations of atoms 1-18, three configuration rules written in simple language, and a completed atomic theory timeline. Those who could not write Dalton's Atomic Theory from memory are required to hand write it five times and submit it for full credit toward that portion of the grade. Key term definitions for chapter 4 are due Friday.

10-26-15: Chapter 3 exam will be tomorrow. We reviewed the chapter 3 reference sheets. Key terms for chapter 4 are due Friday.

10-23-15: Class was disrupted by a fire alarm. We completed the atomic theory timeline after discussing the work of Chadwick and Gell-Man/Zweig. We continued with more of the Bill Nye Video up to "E T C"

10-22-15: We watched more of the Bill Nye Video, discussed atomic discovery, and reviewed electron configuration.

10-21-15: We discussed Mole day (And back to the future day). Students can make a mole for extra credit using the instructions provided on Assignments #31 (Tab on left. Ignore the due date on the assignment, due by end of term, 11/13). We solved Text page 99, #4-7. Students learned how to write electron configuration notation and diagrams. We performed the penny activity of creating electron configuration diagrams.

10-20-15: Students were given a two page pack covering electron configuration. I demonstrated how to draw Bohr diagrams, electron configuration notation for atoms, and electron configuration (structured level) diagrams. Students are to study the structured electron configuration diagrams for atoms 1-18 in the pack.

10-19-15: We discussed electron configuration and reviewed the SPDF orbital shapes and how they arrange around the nucleus. I checked HW (THe marked up periodic table) for credit toward grade.

10-16-15: We discussed electron configuration and the SPDF orbitals. For HW, students are required to label the periodic table with the energy level and orbital cloud labels like on text page 119 (with corrections).

10-15-15: Reviewed the work of Thomson, Bohr and Schrodinger with demonstrations.

10-14-15: No lessons today as the PSAT exam was administered in the classroom to this class.

10-13-15: Interim grades are posted in the classroom and will be entered on-line after the teacher submit deadline Friday. I will make adjustments as missing and new work is evaluated. The on-line interim grades will remain unchanged until the report card term grades are posted after November 18th. Today we began a discussion of color as it relates to the ways electrons configure themselves around the nucleus of an atom. We covered the electromagnetic spectrum (page 92), classifying 7 types of electromagnetic radiation in order of wavelength, frequency, and energy. I demonstrated the cathode ray tube and began to discuss the work of Thomson in 1897.

10-9-15: Students performed the "Isotope Activity" in small groups earning credit toward their grade while writing names and symbols for 10 isotopes as determined by counting colored beads that represented atomic parts in a bag (i.e. the nucleus). We also reviewed text P89, #4-6. Students are to complete the chapter 3 pack except for the atomic theory timeline. As an alternative to the isotope activity performed in class students are to: 1 - Use the internet to research and report the symbols of the isotopes of iron that have half-lives of 1 minute or more. 2 - Write the names and symbols of the isotopes with the following proton/neutron combinations: 1/0, 1/1, 5/6, 8/8, 12/12, 12/13, 13/14, 16/16, 20/22, and 22/25.

10-8-15: We discussed Isotopes and went over problems from the text (p 108 #39 and 45). We continued watching the Bill Nye Video to 15:28 (Periodic Table).

10-7-15: We discussed the structure of the nucleus and how to write names and symbols for isotopes of atoms. Students were asked to complete #19 on CRWS 3.2 regarding isotopes of the first 5 atoms. Students are to continue their study by solving #4-6 on page 89 as homework (ungraded - but a quiz will cover this topic after our review). Student observed a simulation of a an unstable isotope of uranium which resulted in an atomic bomb, see: Students can play with this simulation via the following link. 10-6-15: I checked HW (Dalton's 5 written once from page 78 on the chapter 2 worksheet pack and we continued to watch the Bill Nye video (See blog entry 10/1) to "The synthesis of Urea" 9:47.

10-5-15: Grades from the exam and recent homework are posted. We completed the cryogenic demonstration. For HW, students must write "Dalton's five principles" on the front page of the first chapter 3 package.

10-2-15: Students handed in their density graphs. We had several demonstration involving dry ice and liquid nitrogen.

10-1-15: We began an introduction to atomic theory, chapter 3 and, I checked the HW (key terms). I distributed a worksheet for the video "Bill Nye's Greatest discoveries in chemistry" and we discussed the first two watching the video to 6:30. I handed out the first reference sheet pack covering 3.1 and 3.2. We had a safety briefing regarding the cryogenic demonstrations tomorrow.

9-30-15: We had our unit 1 exam; Open notes. An extra credit sheet was distributed after the exam, a blank periodic table and element list. Key terms for chapter 3 are due tomorrow. The Density graph is due on Friday.

9-29-15: We will have our unit 1 exam tomorrow. Students can use their notebooks during the exam. Today we reviewed various uses of lab equipment and how to measure and calculate density. Students were given a piece of graph paper to create, for grade, a bar graph of the liquid a solid densities listed in Table 4 on text page 17. We reviewed the characteristics of these states of matter. We examined the data so as to qualify which materials needed to be included on the graph. We reviewed the qualities of a bar graph. Your graph is due by Friday and will be scored for each of the following attributes: Axis labels with numbers and units on the Y-axis, a graph title, scaled y-axis, all required substances represented by a bar, and neatness.

9-21-15: We completed our review of the Math Pack and demonstrated unit conversions with the doctors scale (Kg vs Lbs). The Unit 1 exam will be Tuesday September 29th covering the materials from class and chapters 1 & 2 from the text.

9-18-15: We reviewed the rules of using significant figures in measurements and unit conversions (calculations). Students received credit toward their grade for completing #1-4 on the math pack handed out yesterday covering this material. For extra credit, students can convert the speed limit on the sign above my desk into miles per hour using the factor unit method.

9-17-15: We explored accuracy and precision in measurements. Students were provided a three-sheet pack dealing with this topic plus scientific notation, metric measurements and unit conversion. We measured the density of two samples (graphite and lead) and examined their melting characteristics.

9-16-15: Students continued CRWS 1.3 and 2.1. I checked HW (Key Terms & CRWS 1.1 & 1.2) for grade. We examined the reaction of vinegar and baking soda, testing for the product of CO2 gas. We also examined the sublimation of iodine. We began to review the HW.

9-11-15: Students were given CRWS for 1.3 and 2.1 (chapter.section). Upon return to class after Wednesday, Key terms for chapter 1 and the CRWS for 1.1 and 1.2 will be checked for credit toward grade. We discussed the events of 9/11/2001.

9-10-15: We continued to explore the key terms and concepts from chapter 1. I detailed how I will grade the key term assignments for each chapter. For chapter 1, students are to have a separate, dictionary like, listing of the key term definitions for the chapter that include those listed on the projection board and the ones listed on textbook page 30. I showed the flaming textbook and we discussed the physical changes of dissolving and size reduction in addition to those shown in Figure 5 on text page 381. Students are tom complete CRWS 1.1 and 1.2.

9-9-15: Students were provided with the Concept Review Worksheet for chapter 1 covering sections 1 & 2. Students were asked to complete section 1, #1-13 and continue working the sheet using the textbook. Students were also asked to create a separate section of their notes for key term definitions. Students were provided the following chapter 1 key terms to define: Chemical, Chemical Change, Physical Change, Matter, Gas Solid, Liquid, Plasma, Heat, Energy, and Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT). We discussed KMT and absolute zero. Students were shown the chemical reaction equations (with examples and discussion) of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and the combustion of paraffin candle wax. s For homework tonight (only tonight-no late credit will be offered), students are to login to schoolnet and check to see if they can get on-line access to the student textbook (Holt Chemistry). Students who email their results to me or write a note to drop in the box will receive credit for this assignment (i.e. [Name, Period] was [able to / unable to] see the textbook online). If you were unable to access the textbook on-line, state the specific error or provide a screen shot of your failed attempt.

9-8-15: First day of class. I hope you felt welcome and enthused about the subject. Students received a hard copy print of the syllabus to keep in their notebook and were assigned seats. Note: The syllabus is available in digital format as item #1 on the tab titled "Assignments /EC" on the left. If we entered into course topics, we discussed physical and chemical changes using acetone and polystyrene foam as examples. We discussed how everything in the universe is either matter or energy. If not, we will soon discuss these things. Your homework tonight is three fold: 1) Complete the two-part prompt handed out in class, 2) Assemble a 3-ring binder notebook with a dedicated section for Chemistry to include: Key Terms, notes, and handouts, and to visit this website to read the update I entered after 3:00 pm.
