This is the Blog for my 40-week Chemistry Class for the 2015-16 school year at George Washington High School.

6-15-16: 5 gallon ethanol rocket car demo and the floating basketball.

6-13-16: As the course work is complete, I will not be entering daily blog entries from this point on. However, I will continue lessons related to the curriculum or other fun science stuff.

6-9-16: Same as 6-7, 7th period class took their final exam. During 5th period, we spoke about Dr. Temple Grandin and I created a reference link (#101) with videos about her work.

6-8-16: Same as 6-7. 7th period final exam is tomorrow.

6-7-16: At this time, students should prepare for the final exam by organizing their notes, transcribing them to a five page reference sheet that can be used on the exam, and review the course key terms. I began showing "Home" (2009), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghkQoJoipbM and handed out a worksheet students can complete for extra credit. We will be watching the video over several days.

6-6-16: We completed World of Chemistry video #16, "The Proton in Chemistry" and students submitted the video worksheet for grade. At this time, students should prepare for the final exam by organizing their notes, transcribing them to a five page reference sheet that can be used on the exam, and review the course key terms. Some students also saw the reversible synthesis of carbonic acid (and got a chance to taste soda water)!

6-3-16: We watched the first five minutes of the World of Chemistry video #16, "The Proton in Chemistry" after discussing the important equations and concepts from chapter 15.

6-2-16: A substitute covered my class today because I was a the LEAD 2016 conference at district headquarters. Students received a list of topics covered by the course and a list of teaching standards. Students were asked to write a and submit a response to one of the standards as if it was a constructed response prompt.

6-1-16: 2nd period began saw a demonstration of boiling water from ice (an exploration of vapor pressure). 5th period saw a lab demonstration on contact angle including a video of rain falling on a Rain-X coated windshield. 7th periods discussed Acid/Base reactions.

5-31-16: We had a quiz on phase diagrams and began to discuss acids base reactions. Student were given a work sheet titled "Acid, Base, or Salt". 2nd period began this sheet. 5th and 7th saw a demonstration of boiling water from ice (an exploration of vapor pressure).

5-27-16: We completed our chapter 11 discussions. There will be a quiz on parts of a phase diagram after the holiday and we will then begin a short unit on acids a bases covered in text chapter 15. 7th period did not have a regular class meeting due to a fire drill dismissal that occurred near the start of the period

5-26-16: We discussed phase diagrams and vapor pressure. (text pages 401-403).

5-25-16: 2nd period covered the raindrop discussion f yesterday and watched a video of the behavior a water on the space station (See reference item #49 - tab on left). All students are to complete CRWS 11.1 #1-6 and CRWS 11.2 #1-3 which we will review tomorrow.

5-24-16: Students received a reference pack for chapter 11 and we discussed types of natural forces (four types) and types of intermolecular forces (four types). We also discussed the shape of raindrops as they related to forces that act upon them.

5-23-16: 7th period watched "World of Chemistry #20 - On the Surface". a worksheet was submitted for grade. 5th period watched a portion (23 minutes) of the American Experience (PBS) video, "The Poisoner's Handbook". 2nd period did not meet due to the shorter periods and Keystone testing schedule.

5-20-16: Only 7th period met due to building evacuation for a bomb threat. We watched a few you tube video's (The world without Humans, Humans in 1000 years and then part of the first episode of "Breakthrough" - from the National Geographic Channel. We are still on the Keystone exam bell schedule.

5-19-16: 2nd did not meet. 7th period: key terms were checked and we saw a few surface tension demonstrations. 5th period finished WoC #20, "On the surface.

5-18-16: We continued or completed the video, "On the surface".

5-17-16: 7th period did not meet. 5th period watched "World of Chemistry #20 - On The Surface" to 8:30. 2nd period to 14:00.

5-16-16: I checked the HW (Key terms for chapter 11). We saw a few demonstrations of capillary action and surface tension. 7th period did not meet due to keystone testing (shorter class periods today).

5-13-16: Students received an article about fusion power. A link to this article can be found HERE along with a the prompts. Students are to submit written responses to the prompts.

5-12-16: We took the exam covering chapter 12. Some students from 7th period will take the exam later (or submit a project) due to testing schedules this week. Key terms for chapter 11 are due during our next schedules class meeting.

5-11-16: Students received a four page stapled pack covering the gas laws and a summary of the chapter. The chapter 12 exam will be tomorrow. We reviewed the chapter and continued with gas law calculations. Key terms for chapter 11 are due Monday next week.

5-10-16: Due to the half day schedule, only 2nd period met. We reviewed calculations involving the gas laws.

5-9-16: We reviewed 8 gas law equations and how the value for the gas law constant can changed depending on units. 7th period performed calculations with the ideal gas law.

5-6-16: The lab report/HW was due today. 2nd and 5th period students watched the Paul Hewitt video titled "Gases" , 7th period students reviewed 8 gas law equations. All students received a problem sheet covering calculations of Boyle's, Charles' and Gay-Lussac's laws.

5-5-16: We performed a lab that predicted the value of absolute zero using Gay-Lussac's law. Students are required to complete and submit the lab sheet by tomorrow for homework. Data from the lab is as follows: (20.6C, 98.6kPa), (98.9C, 124.5kPa), and (0.0C, 90.7kPa). Students are expected to plot this data and extrapolate to the temperature where the gas has no pressure (absolute zero). 5-4-16: Student received a worksheet with data to plot form the three gas laws from yesterday. Two classes got to see marshmallow peeps inflated and deflated in a vacuum chamber.

5-3-16: We continued with gas law demonstrations. We saw equations for Boyle's, Charles' and Gay-Lussac's laws and and examined the "PTV" ruler to help predict properties of gases.

5-2-16: We continued with saw various demonstrations of pressure and vacuum using pumps and a barometer..

4-29-16: Students saw various demonstrations of pressure. We spoke about the atmosphere. 7th period had a check of Key terms for HW grade.

4-28-16: Half day for report card conferences. 2nd period did not meet. 5th period followed the lesson from yesterday. 7th period took the Chapter 9 exam (They have chapter 12 key terms due tomorrow)..

4-27-16 - Half day for report card conferences. Only 2nd period met. Students obtained CRWS 12.1 and we began a discussion on the properties of gases. A siphon was demonstrated and we talked about why it won't work for distances higher than about 30 feet. We spoke about atmospheric pressure. Key terms were checked for HW.

4-26-16: No Class due to Election Day. Teachers had professional development on restorative practices.

4-25-16: Students in 2nd and 5th periods took the chapter 9 exam. Students in 7th watched various science related videos (Ted talk, Hindenburg Disaster, Skunked...) as many students were attending the spirit program.

4-22-16: I provided stoichiometric solution tips that can be used to help solve chapter 9 problems. WE reviewed a few more problems and a practice exam. The exam is on Monday and Key terms for chapter 12 are due as homework on the following class day (Wednesday or Thursday due to half day schedule. There is No class on Tuesday.

4-21-16: We continued a review of chapter 9 problems. Monday's quiz will be based on the problems of 9.1 and 9.2.

4-20-16: Students received CRWS 9.2 and 9.3. We discussed CRWS 9.2 #1-10 to review terms and the performed calculations to solve #11 and #12. Students are to continue with these calculation to the point of comfort with them. The exam will consist of 2 problems one like those in 9.1 and the other like 9.2.

4-19-16: We completed learning how to work the problems from CRWS 9.1. Students are to complete as many as necessary to become familiar with these calculations. Answers (not solutions) are posted so that you may check your work.

4-18-16: We completed watching "The Electric Boy" video. Students submitted the extra credit video worksheet. Others took missing end of term exams.

4-15-16: Classes watched different amounts of the Cosmos video "The electric boy" a tribute to Michael Faraday. 7th period got to nearly the end.

4-14-16: We reviewed CRWS 9.1 #14 and 15. Students were given a four part stoichiometry practice sheet and asked to solve the pages labeled "Conservation of Mass" and "Gram Formula Mass (Molar Mass)" from that sheet.

4-13-16: We continued with CRWS 9.1. 2nd period students received a grade for on-time completion of CRWS 9.1 #1-13 that we discussed yesterday. Due to instructional delay (student behavior), 2nd period did not get to see the "Prince Rupert's Drop" demonstration (See Reference Item #93). Those students can earn extra credit by writing one paragraph about Prince Rupert's drops before the time I choose to demonstrate it to them.

4-12-16: Students received CRWS 9.1 and we solved and discussed answers to #1-13. For 2nd period, I checked the sheets after #1&2 were answered to assure that everyone was on-task.

4-11-16: Students took the chapter 7 quiz, the last score to be entered into the term 3 grades.

4-8-16: I checked and graded the HW. As a matter of review, I told students which pages have example problem solutions for each type of the problems on Monday's quiz.

4-7-16: We reviewed the list of problems to be given on Monday's exam covering the calculations from chapter 7. We learned how to solve the last type of problem (determining molecular formula from having both empirical formula and molar mass - see text page 245 - we reviewed the problems on that page). For HW students are to complete CRWS 7.3 #6-10.

4-6-16: I checked the HW for grade and reviewed it.

4-5-16: We learned how to calculate empirical formulas from % composition data. For HW students are to complete CRWS 8.3 #1-5.

4-4-16: I checked and reviewed HW. We began to learn how do determine empirical formulas from percent composition suing the examples and practice problems on page 242 and 243.

4-1-16: I checked the HW (CRWS 7.2) and reviewed any questions about the assignment. Answers are posted. I distributed CRWS 7.3 and we learned how to calculate percent composition. Students are to complete #11-15 on CRWS 7.3 for HW due Monday. The quiz will follow completion of all the calculations on CRWS 7.3. It will consist of nine problems formatted like the sample problems A-I in chapter 7.

3-31-16: We learned the calculation necessary to determine average atomic mass and a tabular method of determining molar mass. Students are to complete CRWS 7.2 (#1-8 complete with work shown) for HW. We also watched a new periodic table song/video (see link #59 via the reference tab on the left.

3-30-16: I reviewed the "Molar Masses" worksheet handed out yesterday and students received a grade for having it complete with calculations written out. Answers are posted.

3-29-16: We discussed the calculations from CRWS 7.1 Students received a reference sheet (some classes got this yesterday) to guide them in the factor unit method of performing the 7.1 calculations. Students were give an HW sheet on molar mass conversions (due tomorrow).

3-28-16: We reviewed problems from chapter 7 section 1. Students should be familiar with these calculations and complete CRWS 7.1 #1-10 for HW.

3-21-16: With reduced attendance, rather than continue lessons, we watched Neil Tyson's Cosmos (Episode 3) and students were given a question sheet to submit for extra credit at the end of the class period.

3-18-16: We continued using the factor unit method to solve problems like those on text pages 228, 229, 231, and 232. Students need to practice using their scientific calculators to solve these problems. Students who need help should search youtube and khan academy for "Molar conversions" and "how to use scientific notation on calculators". For HW, due after spring break, students should complete CRWS 7.1 (#1-10).

3-17-16: Students learned how to calculate molar mass and we reviewed the HW (all but period 2). 5th and 7th period received credit for grade for the HW . Chapter 8 exam grades are now posted.

3-16-16: Students were provided with a reference sheet containing calculation problems for chapter 7. I reviewed the use of Avogadro's number in problems illustrated by samples A & B on pages 228 and 229. For HW students are to complete CRWS 7.1 #1-5 showing the "factor-unit method" work as part of the solution as illustrated in class.

3-15-16: Students took the chapter 8 exam and were given an extra credit "March Madness" style puzzle on ions and solubility that is due upon return from spring break.

3-14-16: 2nd period did not meet due to the half-day schedule. 5th and 7th periods reviewed for tomorrow's exam covering chapter 8. We began our discussions with #48 from p295.

3-11-16: 2nd period attended Ms. James' fashion show, 5th period took the "No 'R'-word" pledge and we watched the two videos: (one on the explorations into subatomic particle physics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqAWqwh3Etw and the other on dark matter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kCtiOS_F_M#t=15.175045. 7th period reviewed the constructed response on silver recovery and were awarded grade for its completion. The exam on chapter 8 will be Tuesday and the key terms for chapters 7 & 9 will be due Wednesday.

3-10-16: We reviewed CRWS 8.4 and I demonstrated some aqueous double displacement reactions which we used to predict products (i.e. the spectator ions and solid precipitates). Some classes reviewed the "Silver Recovery" paper from yesterday and received a grade for its completion.

3-9-16: The chapter 8 exam will be Friday. Students received as credit toward grade a constructed response on "Silver recovery" by displacement reaction. I also demonstrate how solid silver is detected from plated silver using nitric acid.

3-8-16: We continued to learn about using the solubility tables to predict solid, precipitated products from aqueous double displacement reactions. Students were asked to solve problems on page 289 (#8 a, b, & e and #10 a c, & e).

3-7-16: 2nd and 7th period had an assembly, so the quiz is postponed another day. 5th period reviewed the classification HW listed 3-4. 5th period also took the activity series quiz.

3-4-16: HW finish CRWS 8.4 and classify each of the chemical reactions on the equation side of the worksheet handed out on 2/10 (30 equation WS). We identified the spectator ions from figures in the book on pages 286, 283, and 261. We discussed net ionic equations, total ionic equations, and precipitates and soluble ions. 7th period took the activity series quiz. Other classes will have the quiz on Monday.

3-3-16: Students solved and we reviewed #42-44 on page 294 (Note: the directions for problem #42 should read: "Predict the products of the following reactions. Classify then balance each reaction." Classes saw whichever of yesterday's demonstrations that were not shown. The activity series quiz will be tomorrow (postponed to Monday).

3-2-16: Students received more practice with the activity series and we solved #41 on page 294 and saw demonstrations of either thermite and/or aluminum with copper II chloride.

3-1-16: We reviewed and students received a grade for CRWS 8.3. There will be a quiz on these types of problems before the chapter 8 exam.

2-29-16: We reviewed use of the activity series to predict the products of single displacement reactions. We covered P282 practice problems 1-3.

2-25-16: 2nd period took the balancing equations quiz. We began discussing the activity series and examined the reaction illustrated on page 280. Students are to use the activity series, our discussion, and text pages 280-281 to solve Practice problems 1-3 on page 382

2-24-16: 5th and 7th period classes did not meet due to the half day schedule for report card conferences. 2nd period did not meet due to a special temporary revised class schedule.

2-23-16: 2nd period didn't meet due to half day schedule (report card conferences). 5th and 7th took a quiz on balancing chemical reactions. We also learned the format an names for 5 classifications of reactions (CRWS 8.3 #1-5)

2-22-16: Students were given CRWS 8.3 and 8.4. For HW they are to answer 8.3 #1-5 and match the five formats on the back of the sheet with their reaction types based on key term and text descriptions. I gave credit toward grade to all students who had at least 10 equations balanced on the 30 equation supplemental worksheet distributed 2-10. We reviewed any questions students had in preparation for a quiz during the next scheduled class.

2-19-16: We reviewed the HW. For HW students are asked to have any 10 equations balanced from the
30 equation supplemental worksheet distributed 2-10.

2-18-16: We explored the "phet" simualtions to further explore methods to balance chemical equations. We studied the "Poly-atomic ions as a group" method on page 271. For HW, students are to balance any 5 equations from the 30 equation supplemental worksheet distributed 2-10.

2-17-16: Same and plan from 2-16-17. Also included demonstrations with calcium carbide ("The rock that burns with water", and "The carbide cannon"). Students can now identify and balance combustion reactions.

2-16-16: Only 2nd period met due to the half day schedule. We continued with balancing equations from 269 & 271.

2-12-16: We practice balancing chemical equations like those described in the sample problems of text pages 269 and 271. For HW students are to identify then balance all the combustion equations on the balancing worksheet then work the practice problems from pages 269 and 271.

2-11-16: I reviewed the formulas for the word problems on the balancing equations worksheet and hung the answers (unbalanced equations). Students are expected to begin balancing equations beginning with the practice problems on page 269.

2-10-16: Today I checked the HW and awarded grade points for completion, but I did not yet review it. I handed out a sheet containing 30 chemical reaction equations. Students worked on writing formulas for each of the elements, compounds, and molecules listed in the word problems on that sheet.

2-9-16: For HW, students are asked to complete CRWS 8.1 #1-11. We discussed many of these in class. 2nd period completed the demonstration from yesterday. 7th period saw a demonstration of Silver Dendrites forming under a digital microscope as per the single displacement reaction illustrated on textbook page 280, figure 12.

2-8-16: We began chapter 8. I checked the HW (9 Key Term definitions from chapter 8) and students received a reference sheet (the concept review worksheet - "CRWS") for chapter 8 sections 1 and 2. Students were asked to complete CRWS 8.1 #1-5. We discussed chemical change, what a chemical reaction equation is and I began or completed a demonstration of the decomposition of water including tests for oxygen gas and hydrogen gas.

2-5-16: Continued Free Range Chemistry to completion or made up missing work. In some classes I spoke about the largest firework ever made in North America which will be exploded this weekend at the Steamboat Springs Colorado winter festival (See: https://www.facebook.com/WeAreSteamboatRadio/videos/847362012048683/?pnref=story )

2-4-16: 2nd period, as a treat, saw Ms. James fashion show. 5th period took their midterm. 7th period continued with makeup and EC work. Key terms for chapter 8 are due Monday.

2-3-16: 7th and 5th periods used the time to make up missing work, prepare for the midterm or earn extra credit by writing items on a reference sheet from watching "Free Range Chemistry" (See Item #37 on the references tab). 2nd period took the midterm exam. The exam will count for 20% of the term 2 grade. For additional EC, see item #48 on teh EC tab on the left (students can submit up to 5 Haiku poems for 1 point each as directed).

2-2-16: 2nd and 5th periods used the time to make up missing work, prepare for the midterm or earn extra credit by writing items on a reference sheet from watching "Free Range Chemistry" (See Item #37 on the references tab). 7th period took the midterm exam. The exam will count for 20% of the term 2 grade.

2-1-16: We reviewed the topics covered on the chapter 6 quiz. Students then took the quiz and submitted their papers upon completion or dismissal (whichever came first). Key terms for chapter 8 are due next Monday (after mid term exams). Students can prepare for the midterm by scanning the key terms for each chapter, reviewing their notes and reference packs for each chapter, then attempting and reviewing the relevant multiple choice questions that appear at the end of each chapter, the "standardized test prep". 1-29-16: We finished the Reference pack for chapter 6. It will be checked for completeness Monday and I will review and questions. Students should be ready for a quiz covering chapter 6 on Monday.

1-28-16: We continue our review of CRWS 6.2; upon completion, we will have a quiz. Midterm exams are next week in accordance with the school-wide schedule.

1-27-16: We reviewed CRWS 6.2 #1-7 and the sample problem on page 202. We discussed the Lewis structures for binary molecules involving sing, double and triple bonds. For HW students are to complete Practice problems 1&2 from page 202 and #8-10 on CRWS 6.2. 7th period watched a Khan Academy video on Resonance structures. They are to complete the problems from pages 202, 203, and 205.

1-25/26-16: No school due to snow days

1-22-16: 2nd period did not meet. We continued with posted work from yesterday including CRWS 6.2 # 8 & 9 plus the sample problem on page 203.

1-21-16: Chapter 6 key terms were checked for periods 2 and 5. We began to discuss Lewis structures. Students were asked to solve CRWS 6.2 #1-7 (This is HW if not done in class as the "Do-Now") and to draw the Lewis structures for the period 3 elements using the table on page 200 (showing the period two element's Lewis Structures) as a guide.

1-20-16: Students were asked to examine pages 194-195 to answer questions #12-18 on CRWS 6.1. For HW students are to have CRWS 6.1 completed (#1-23).

1-19-16: Quiz grades were posted. Students received the reference pack for chapter 6. We defined the covalent bond and reviewed CRWS 6.1 #1-4. Key terms for chapter 6 will be due Thursday (except period 7, due today).

1-15-16: We reviewed the chapter 5 pack then had a quiz covering chapter 5. For HW, students are to write the key term definitions for chapter 6.

1-14-16: We continued the lessons from 1/5 that had been suspended due to keystone exams. I checked the HW from 1/5 and we reviewed each type of problem from 5.3 on the reference pack. For HW students to to have the chapter 5 pack complete in preparation from a quiz tomorrow.

1-13-16: 5th period had an introduction to stoichiometry and chemical reactions (Chapters 7-9) by conducting a demonstration of magnesium flash powder. We wrote the equation, balanced it, converted to weight ratios, then performed the reaction. 7th period continued the Atomic Cafe to the end. 2nd period did not meet.

11-12-16: 5th period watched "War games" to 33:00. 7th period continued "The Atomic Cafe" to 42:13. 2nd period did not meet.

1-11-16: 2nd period did not meet. 5th continued the atomic cafe to the end?. 7th began the atomic cafe to 12:07. An extra credit worksheet was handed out to them for the Atomic Cafe (See on-line video; https://vimeo.com/25154726).

1-8-16: With the shorter schedule from Keystone Testing and reduced attendance, we did not continue with the chemistry curriculum but rather 2nd period continued to watch "Blast from the Past" to 41:00. 5th period continued with The Atomic Cafe" to 103:00. 1-7-16: With the shorter schedule from Keystone Testing and reduced attendance, we did not continue with the chemistry curriculum but rather 2nd period heard Tom Lehrer songs related to nuclear proliferation and elected to watch "Blast from the Past" to 14:00 rather than continue with "The Atomic Cafe". 5th period continued with The Atomic Cafe" to 37:00. In the light of the news of recent atomic bomb testing from North Korea, 5th period also watched a you tube video showing a map of atomic explosions from 1945 to 1998. 1-6-16: We looked at a water still in operation. We discussed the flow of water and energy through the process. With the shorter schedule from Keystone Testing, the rest of the period was used to watch footage of the Trinity test as shown in the video "The Atomic Cafe" (See on-line video; https://vimeo.com/25154726). 7th period did not meet.

1-5-16: I checked and reviewed the HW (for grade). I posted the answers. For HW students are to solve CRWS 5.3 #32-40 and 45-47.

1-4-15: Students were asked to review the rules for naming ionic compounds and as a "Do-Now" solve CRWS 5.3 #1-8. we reviewed these problems in class and continued with others on this sheet. 2nd period students earned graded credit for this work. For HW students are to have complete up to #31. I also read a few excerpts from the introduction to McCutcheon's "General Chemistry", copyright 1944, regarding the dissemination of technical knowledge thought the ages and the threat of loosing that knowledge.

12-23-15: 2nd period watched the first 35 minutes of "The Dark Crystal" (available on youtube). 5th completed Apollo 13, 7th played/watched dodgeball in the gym.

12-22-15: 2nd period elected to not watch Apollo 13 but rather play Kahoot. 5th and 7th continued the video whihc we expect to complete tomorrow.

12-21-15: We discussed the Apollo Program, the fire on Apollo 1, and began watching the film "Apollo 13". Students are permitted to make up missing work during the next three days or watch the film and submit the video worksheet for extra credit.

12-18-15: Only 2nd period met today with fewer students than normal due to half day schedule. Rather than proceed with new topics, we played Kahoot to enhance general knowledge. 5th and 7th did not meet.

12-17-15: I checked, graded and reviewed the HW. Those who had 5.1 complete received 80% grade for yesterday's HW if it was not produced yesterday.

12-16-15: We reviewed the HW for grade. Students are to complete the rest of CRWS 5.1 (#9-16) for HW

12-15-15: I reviewed the HW from last night. Students are to solve CRWS 5.1 #1-8 for HW.

12-14-15: We reviewed the HW. For HW tonight, students are to complete the constructed response and solve P180 #5-8.

12-11-15: Students were required (for grade) to label the ions listed on the "Common Ion Table" as "P" for polyatomic or "S" for simple. We reviewed this in class. Students are to complete part A on the constructed response titled "Formulas for Ionic Compounds". This was worksheet #1 from the substitute last week.

12-10-15: I reviewed some of the problems on the worksheets provided by the substitute covering naming and writing formulas for ionic compounds. Students are to continue to complete those sheets.

12-3 to 12-9/15: Students followed plans left with a substitute as I was bereaving the death of my mother. I will return 12/10 and review the progress made in my absence.

12-2-15: Most of the 2nd period students did not show today (many cuts) due to half day report card conference schedule. We played Kahoot. Term 2 grades are posted in the classroom. 5th and 7th periods did not meet.

12-1-15: Student were asked to write the 5 properties of ionic compounds as projected. I demonstrated each of them after discussion. In addition, 5th completed yesterday's video.

11-30-15: All classes received the reference sheet pack covering chapter 5. Due to student lack of preparedness (periods 2 and 5), the key terms for chapter 5 will be checked tomorrow. I introduced chemical bonding (ionic and covalent). Students watched "Chemical Bonds", #8 in the World of Chemistry Video series (See link #3 on the Reference tab on the left). A ten question worksheet was completed as the video played and was collected upon dismissal. 7th period produced the HW for grade (Key Terms for chapter 5) then completed the Giraffe video from Friday. 7th period and 5th period watching just the first portion of "Chemical Bonds" covering ionic bonds (~12min).

11-25-15: 2nd period did not meet due to the half day schedule. 5th period watched a tour of the space station (25 minute version) linked through Item 49 on the reference tab on the left. 7th period watched "Raw Anatomy - The Giraffe" to 45:00.

11-24-15: All classes took the chapter 4 exam. Extra credit essays are due by Monday. Key terms for chapter 5 are due Monday. An extra credit puzzle (the same one from 11/18) will be also counted as extra credit for this exam.

11-23-15: We reviewed for tomorrow's chapter 4 exam. Students discussed a few answers to the reference pack (all answers are posted). We played the on-line game "Kahoot" on topics covered by the exam (The Periodic Table).

11-20-15: Students performed the Mendeleev lab of 1869 for credit toward grade. 7th period also played "Kahoot". As a makeup assignment to the Mendeleev lab, students can submit Assignment #47 from the Assignments/EC tab on the left.

11-19-15: Students reviewed for the exam and took a quiz on the groups in the periodic table. 7th period also helped create and answer key for the puzzle handed out yesterday.

11-18-15: Students received and completed a word puzzle covering key terms for topics covered to date. They submitted it for grade.

11-17-15: Only 2nd period met today as 5th and 7th periods were covered by a substitute. 2nd period completed the Bill Nye video and submitted the worksheet as credit toward grade.

11-16-15: We reviewed some chapter 4 topics. I announced the exam for Tuesday next week. We discussed the term Cation and Anion. Key terms for chapter 5 and 6 are due upon return from the Thanksgiving holiday.

11-13-15: Students reviewed Part B of yesterday's constructed response assignment and place the finished paper in their portfolios. We continued watching the Bill Nye video. 2nd period to the Periodic Table, 5th to Radioactivity, and 7th to Plastics.

11-12-15: We continued our discussion of periodic table trends. Students received a constructed response paper titled "Periodic Table Trends" which we began in class, completing part A. Students are to complete part B for HW to be placed in portfolio folders. Students also assembled their in-class portfolio folders with a summary page then filed today's work into it for credit toward their 2nd term grade.

11-11-15: No school due to the Veteran's Day holiday.

11-10-15: We began a discussion of property trends on the periodic table. Students were asked to consider the trends illustration detailed in section 4.3 of their textbook. We discussed how atomic size influences Ionization energy and the other properties illustrated. 5th period students were given credit toward grade for displaying notes on the subject discussed. All students are asked to complete the chapter 4 reference sheet pack for homework, due Friday.

11-9-15: We reviewed our objectives for chapter 4, our study of the periodic table. Students should complete the reference sheets for the first 2 sections (CRWS 4.1 and 4.2) as discussed in class. Students should also label the 11 groups on the diagram copied onto the last page of the reference pack. We began to examine section 3, "Property Trends in the Periodic Table" by watching a 13 minute video titled "Ferocious Elements". 2nd and 7th periods finished the video, 5th period got to 7:57 of Ferocious elements. 2nd period was offered credit for grade for CRWS 4.1 and labeling of the groups in their reference pack.

11-6-15: We covered CRWS 4.1. Students are to complete CRWS 4.2.

11-5-15: All classes were asked to label the 11 groups (or families) identified on the periodic table. We discussed the properties of hydrogen, metals, non-metals, and semiconductors. A quiz on this will be given at a later date. 7th period saw the Thermite reaction demonstrated with old shotputs and aluminum foil. They also saw the conservation of energy demonstration with a swinging bowling ball.

11-4-15: Students received the reference sheet pack for chapter 4. They were asked to research and then we reviewed CRWS 4.1 #1-6 covering the historical development of the periodic table. I checked key terms for 7th period.

11-3-15: No class due to election day

11-2-15: 2nd and 5th period students used the text to solve p122 #2,3,4, covering the work of Newlands, Medeleev, and Mosley. In addition, 2nd period discussed the contributions to periodic development of Seaborg and Dobereiner for that class, I showed the reaction of Sodium metal. 5th period received credit toward their grade for completing the chapter 4 key terms. 7th period completed the Chapter 3 exam or other work as many were out Friday due to the kidney walk.

10-30-15: 2nd period saw two reactions of magnesium metal: one with oxygen and the other with carbon Dioxide. I also checked the chapter 4 key terms for credit toward grade. 5th and 6th period students took the chapter 3 exam.

10-29-15: Students received an essay on the life of Alfred Nobel, chemical engineer, and creator of the prize that bears his name. Students were required to complete four questions of the essay sheet and one additional question on a half sheet. Students were required to complete these writing during class time and submit the two sheets (stapled together) it as they leave the room in order to receive full credit.

10-28-15: 5th and 7th periods did not meet today due to the half day professional development schedule. 2nd period discussed the group 11 elements and began to discuss how the periodic table organizes elements according their properties. Students observed calcium metal, discussed calcium's presence in our lives, and witnessed a demonstration of the instability of calcium metal when mixed with water. We also discussed the properties of metals as we learned that metals appear in all but the right side of the periodic table.

10-27-15: 2nd period students took the the chapter 3 exam and were given and extra credit puzzle due Monday. During the exam I gave HW credit to those who showed a complete set of reference papers (Two stapled packs complete with isotope tables, marked up periodic tables, electron configurations of atoms 1-18, three configuration rules written in simple language, and a completed atomic theory timeline. Those who could not write Dalton's Atomic Theory from memory are required to hand write it five times and submit it for full credit toward that portion of the grade. Key term definitions for chapter 4 are due Monday. 5th and 7th periods will take the exam Friday. Those classes saw a demonstration of the Methane Mamba and we reviewed the required reference papers from chapter 3 that will count as homework grade points during the exam.

10-26-15: 2nd period: Chapter 3 exam will be tomorrow. We reviewed the chapter 3 reference sheets. Key terms for chapter 4 are due Friday. 5th and 7th periods: We reviewed the chapter 3 reference sheets. Key terms for chapter 4 are due Monday. The exam will be Friday. 7th period completed the "Electron Configuration with Pennies" activity for credit toward their grade.

10-23-15: 2nd period Class was disrupted by discussion of the fire alarm last period. All classes completed the atomic theory timeline after discussing the work of Chadwick and Gell-Man/Zweig. 5th period performed the "Electron Configuration with Pennies" activity for credit toward their grade.

10-22-15: 2nd period discussed atomic discovery, and reviewed electron configuration. Students in that class worked with partners to perform the electron configuration penny activity and received credit toward their grade upon successful completion. 5th and 7th periods did not (yet) perform this activity.

10-21-15: Discussed Mole day (And back to the future day). Students can make a mole for extra credit using the instructions provided on Assignments #31 (Tab on left. Ignore the due date on the assignment, due by end of term, 11/13). We solved Text page 99, #4-7. Students learned how to write electron configuration notation and diagrams. 7th period had the 10/19 HW checked for grade.

10-20-15: 2nd period students were given a two page pack covering electron configuration. For that class, I demonstrated how to draw Bohr diagrams, electron configuration notation for atoms, and electron configuration (structured level) diagrams. Students are to study the structured electron configuration diagrams for atoms 1-18 in the pack. I checked the HW for 5th period students. Both 5th and 7th periods reviewed electron configuration notation and structured level diagrams (like those on test page 98). All classes learned the terms: "Valence Electrons" and "Inert/Noble Gas closed shell electrons".

10-19-15: 2nd period discussed electron configuration and reviewed the SPDF orbital shapes and how they arrange around the nucleus. I checked HW (THe marked up periodic table) for credit toward grade. 5th and 7th periods began
discussing electron configuration and the SPDF orbitals. For HW, 5th and 7th period students are required to label the periodic table with the energy level and orbital cloud labels like on text page 119 (with corrections).

10-15-15: Reviewed the work of Thomson, Bohr and Schrodinger with demonstrations. (7th period did not meet due to bathroom fire and building evacuation).

10-14-15: We looked at the spectrum tubes and discussed the types of light on the electromagnetic spectrum

10-13-15: Interim grades are posted in the classroom and will be entered on-line after the teacher submit deadline Friday. I will make adjustments as missing and new work is evaluated. The on-line interim grades will remain unchanged until the report card term grades are posted after November 18th. Today we began a discussion of color as it relates to the ways electrons configure themselves around the nucleus of an atom. We covered the electromagnetic spectrum (page 92), classifying 7 types of electromagnetic radiation in order of wavelength, frequency, and energy. For 2nd period I demonstrated the cathode ray tube and began to discuss the work of Thomson in 1897.

10-9-15: Students performed the "Isotope Activity" in small groups earning credit toward their grade while writing names and symbols for 10 isotopes as determined by counting colored beads that represented atomic parts in a bag (i.e. the nucleus). We also reviewed text P89, #4-6. Students are to complete the chapter 3 pack except for the atomic theory timeline. As an alternative to the isotope activity (for students who did not complete it), work through item #46 listed on the "Assignments/EC" tab on the left.

10-8-15: We discussed Isotopes and went over problems from the text (p 108 #39 and 45). We continued watching the Bill Nye Video.

10-7-15: We discussed the structure of the nucleus and how to write names and symbols for isotopes of atoms. Students were asked to complete #19 on CRWS 3.2 regarding isotopes of the first 5 atoms. Students are to continue their study by solving #4-6 on page 89 as homework (ungraded - but a quiz will cover this topic after our review). 10-6-15: I checked HW for period 2 (Dalton's 5 written once from page 78 on the chapter 2 worksheet pack). 2nd period class also watched the Bill Nye video (See blog entry 10/1) to 8:37. I offered extra credit, "Create 150 'elements' in the on-line game "Little Alchemy". You can up to 550 elements if you play the game to its fullest. 5th period watched just the introduction to the video. 7th period finished their exam from 9-30.

10-5-15: Grades from the exam and recent homework are posted. We completed the cryogenic demonstration. For HW, 2nd and fifth period must write "Dalton's five principles" on the front page of the first chapter 3 package.

10-2-15: Students handed in their density graphs. We had several demonstration involving dry ice and liquid nitrogen.

10-1-15: We began an introduction to atomic theory, chapter 3 and, for 2nd and 5th periods, I checked the HW (key terms) and we discussed Dalton's atomic theory. These two classes were also given the reference worksheet for the video "Bill Nye's Greatest Discoveries in Chemistry". This video can be found as item #27 listed on the "reference" page tab on the left side of this page. I handed out the video . We had a safety briefing regarding the cryogenic demonstrations tomorrow.

9-30-15: We had our unit 1 exam; Open notes. 2nd and 5th period classes were given an extra credit sheet after the exam, a blank periodic table and element list. Key terms for chapter 3 are due tomorrow. The Density graph is due on Friday. 7th periods exam was disrupted by a false fire alarm and will be rescheduled.

9-29-15: We will have our unit 1 exam tomorrow. Students can use their notebooks during the exam. Today we reviewed various uses of lab equipment and how to measure and calculate density. Students were given a piece of graph paper to create, for grade, a bar graph of the liquid a solid densities listed in Table 4 on text page 17. We reviewed the characteristics of these states of matter. We examined the data so as to qualify which materials needed to be included on the graph. We reviewed the qualities of a bar graph. Your graph is due by Friday and will be scored for each of the following attributes: Axis labels with numbers and units on the Y-axis, a graph title, scaled y-axis, all required substances represented by a bar, and neatness.

9-21-15: We reviewed the Metric Measurement conversions and conversions between the SI and English systems. The Unit 1 exam will be Tuesday September 29th covering the materials from class and chapters 1 & 2 from the text.

9-18-15: We reviewed the rules of using significant figures in measurements and unit conversions (calculations). Students received credit toward their grade for completing #1-14 on the math pack handed out yesterday covering this material. For extra credit, students can convert the speed limit on the sign above my desk into miles per hour using the factor unit method.

9-17-15: We explored accuracy and precision in measurements. Students were provided a three-sheet pack dealing with this topic plus scientific notation, metric measurements and unit conversion. We measured the density of two samples (graphite and lead) and examined their melting characteristics.

9-16-15: Students continued CRWS 1.3 and 2.1. I checked HW (Key Terms & CRWS 1.1 & 1.2) for grade. We examined the reaction of vinegar and baking soda, testing for the product of CO2 gas. We began to review the HW.

9-11-15: Students were given CRWS for 1.3 and 2.1 (chapter.section). Upon return to class after Wednesday, Key terms for chapter 1 and the CRWS for 1.1 and 1.2 will be checked for credit toward grade. We discussed the events of 9/11/2001.

9-10-15: We continued to explore the key terms and concepts from chapter 1. I detailed how I will grade the key term assignments for each chapter. For chapter 1, students are to have a separate, dictionary like, listing of the key term definitions for the chapter that include those listed on the projection board and the ones listed on textbook page 30. I showed the flaming textbook and we discussed the physical changes of dissolving and size reduction in addition to those shown in Figure 5 on text page 381. Students are tom complete CRWS 1.1 and 1.2. Classes who did not see the acetone/polystyrene foam dissolving demonstration on prior days, saw this today.

9-9-15: Students were provided with the Concept Review Worksheet for chapter 1 covering sections 1 & 2. Students were asked to complete section 1, #1-13 and continue working the sheet using the textbook. Students were also asked to create a separate section of their notes for key term definitions. Students were provided the following chapter 1 key terms to define: Chemical, Chemical Change, Physical Change, Matter, Gas Solid, Liquid, Plasma, Heat, Energy, and Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT). We discussed KMT and absolute zero. Some classes were shown the chemical reaction equations (with examples and discussion) of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and the combustion of paraffin candle wax. For homework tonight (only tonight - no late credit offered), students are to login to schoolnet and check to see if they can get on-line access to the student textbook (Holt Chemistry). Students who email their results to me or write a note to drop in the box will receive credit for this assignment (i.e. [Name, Period] was [able to / unable to] see the textbook online). If you were unable to access the textbook on-line, state the specific error or provide a screen shot of your failed attempt.

9-8-15: First day of class. I hope you felt welcome and enthused about the subject. Students received a hard copy print of the syllabus to keep in their notebook and were assigned seats. Note: The syllabus is available in digital format as item #1 on the tab titled "Assignments /EC" on the left. If we entered into course topics, we discussed physical and chemical changes using acetone and polystyrene foam as examples. We discussed how everything in the universe is either matter or energy. If not, we will soon discuss these things. Your homework tonight is three fold: 1) Complete the two-part prompt handed out in class, 2) Assemble a 3-ring binder notebook with a dedicated section for Chemistry to include: Key Terms, notes, and handouts, and to visit this website to read the update I entered after 3:00 pm. 6-13-16: As the course work is complete, I will not be entering daily blog entries from this point on. However, I will continue lessons related to the curriculum or other fun science stuff.

6-9-16: Same as 6-7, 7th period class took their final exam. During 5th period, we spoke about Dr. Temple Grandin and I created a reference link (#101) with videos about her work.

6-8-16: Same as 6-7. 7th period final exam is tomorrow.

6-7-16: At this time, students should prepare for the final exam by organizing their notes, transcribing them to a five page reference sheet that can be used on the exam, and review the course key terms. I began showing "Home" (2009),

6-6-16: We completed World of Chemistry video #16, "The Proton in Chemistry" and students submitted the video worksheet for grade. At this time, students should prepare for the final exam by organizing their notes, transcribing them to a five page reference sheet that can be used on the exam, and review the course key terms. Some students also saw the reversible synthesis of carbonic acid (and got a chance to taste soda water)!

6-3-16: We watched the first five minutes of the World of Chemistry video #16, "The Proton in Chemistry" after discussing the important equations and concepts from chapter 15.

6-2-16: A substitute covered my class today because I was a the LEAD 2016 conference at district headquarters. Students received a list of topics covered by the course and a list of teaching standards. Students were asked to write a and submit a response to one of the standards as if it was a constructed response prompt.

6-1-16: 2nd period began saw a demonstration of boiling water from ice (an exploration of vapor pressure). 5th period saw a lab demonstration on contact angle including a video of rain falling on a Rain-X coated windshield. 7th periods discussed Acid/Base reactions.

5-31-16: We had a quiz on phase diagrams and began to discuss acids base reactions. Student were given a work sheet titled "Acid, Base, or Salt". 2nd period began this sheet. 5th and 7th saw a demonstration of boiling water from ice (an exploration of vapor pressure).

5-27-16: We completed our chapter 11 discussions. There will be a quiz on parts of a phase diagram after the holiday and we will then begin a short unit on acids a bases covered in text chapter 15. 7th period did not have a regular class meeting due to a fire drill dismissal that occurred near the start of the period

5-26-16: We discussed phase diagrams and vapor pressure. (text pages 401-403).

5-25-16: 2nd period covered the raindrop discussion f yesterday and watched a video of the behavior a water on the space station (See reference item #49 - tab on left). All students are to complete CRWS 11.1 #1-6 and CRWS 11.2 #1-3 which we will review tomorrow.

5-24-16: Students received a reference pack for chapter 11 and we discussed types of natural forces (four types) and types of intermolecular forces (four types). We also discussed the shape of raindrops as they related to forces that act upon them.

5-23-16: 7th period watched "World of Chemistry #20 - On the Surface". a worksheet was submitted for grade. 5th period watched a portion (23 minutes) of the American Experience (PBS) video, "The Poisoner's Handbook". 2nd period did not meet due to the shorter periods and Keystone testing schedule.

5-20-16: Only 7th period met due to building evacuation for a bomb threat. We watched a few you tube video's (The world without Humans, Humans in 1000 years and then part of the first episode of "Breakthrough" - from the National Geographic Channel. We are still on the Keystone exam bell schedule.

5-19-16: 2nd did not meet. 7th period: key terms were checked and we saw a few surface tension demonstrations. 5th period finished WoC #20, "On the surface.

5-18-16: We continued or completed the video, "On the surface".

5-17-16: 7th period did not meet. 5th period watched "World of Chemistry #20 - On The Surface" to 8:30. 2nd period to 14:00.

5-16-16: I checked the HW (Key terms for chapter 11). We saw a few demonstrations of capillary action and surface tension. 7th period did not meet due to keystone testing (shorter class periods today).

5-13-16: Students received an article about fusion power. A link to this article can be found HERE along with a the prompts. Students are to submit written responses to the prompts.

5-12-16: We took the exam covering chapter 12. Some students from 7th period will take the exam later (or submit a project) due to testing schedules this week. Key terms for chapter 11 are due during our next schedules class meeting.

5-11-16: Students received a four page stapled pack covering the gas laws and a summary of the chapter. The chapter 12 exam will be tomorrow. We reviewed the chapter and continued with gas law calculations. Key terms for chapter 11 are due Monday next week.

5-10-16: Due to the half day schedule, only 2nd period met. We reviewed calculations involving the gas laws.

5-9-16: We reviewed 8 gas law equations and how the value for the gas law constant can changed depending on units. 7th period performed calculations with the ideal gas law.

5-6-16: The lab report/HW was due today. 2nd and 5th period students watched the Paul Hewitt video titled "Gases" , 7th period students reviewed 8 gas law equations. All students received a problem sheet covering calculations of Boyle's, Charles' and Gay-Lussac's laws.

5-5-16: We performed a lab that predicted the value of absolute zero using Gay-Lussac's law. Students are required to complete and submit the lab sheet by tomorrow for homework. Data from the lab is as follows: (20.6C, 98.6kPa), (98.9C, 124.5kPa), and (0.0C, 90.7kPa). 5-4-16: Student received a worksheet with data to plot form the three gas laws from yesterday. Two classes got to see marshmallow peeps inflated and deflated in a vacuum chamber.

5-3-16: We continued with gas law demonstrations. We saw equations for Boyle's, Charles' and Gay-Lussac's laws and and examined the "PTV" ruler to help predict properties of gases.

5-2-16: We continued with saw various demonstrations of pressure and vacuum using pumps and a barometer..

4-29-16: Students saw various demonstrations of pressure. We spoke about the atmosphere. 7th period had a check of Key terms for HW grade.

4-28-16: Half day for report card conferences. 2nd period did not meet. 5th period followed the lesson from yesterday. 7th period took the Chapter 9 exam (They have chapter 12 key terms due tomorrow)..

4-27-16 - Half day for report card conferences. Only 2nd period met. Students obtained CRWS 12.1 and we began a discussion on the properties of gases. A siphon was demonstrated and we talked about why it won't work for distances higher than about 30 feet. We spoke about atmospheric pressure. Key terms were checked for HW.

4-26-16: No Class due to Election Day. Teachers had professional development on restorative practices.

4-25-16: Students in 2nd and 5th periods took the chapter 9 exam. Students in 7th watched various science related videos (Ted talk, Hindenburg Disaster, Skunked...) as many students were attending the spirit program.

4-22-16: I provided stoichiometric solution tips that can be used to help solve chapter 9 problems. WE reviewed a few more problems and a practice exam. The exam is on Monday and Key terms for chapter 12 are due as homework on the following class day (Wednesday or Thursday due to half day schedule. There is No class on Tuesday.

4-21-16: We continued a review of chapter 9 problems. Monday's quiz will be based on the problems of 9.1 and 9.2.

4-20-16: Students received CRWS 9.2 and 9.3. We discussed CRWS 9.2 #1-10 to review terms and the performed calculations to solve #11 and #12. Students are to continue with these calculation to the point of comfort with them. The exam will consist of 2 problems one like those in 9.1 and the other like 9.2.

4-19-16: We completed learning how to work the problems from CRWS 9.1. Students are to complete as many as necessary to become familiar with these calculations. Answers (not solutions) are posted so that you may check your work.

4-18-16: We completed watching "The Electric Boy" video. Students submitted the extra credit video worksheet. Others took missing end of term exams.

4-15-16: Classes watched different amounts of the Cosmos video "The electric boy" a tribute to Michael Faraday. 7th period got to nearly the end.

4-14-16: We reviewed CRWS 9.1 #14 and 15. Students were given a four part stoichiometry practice sheet and asked to solve the pages labeled "Conservation of Mass" and "Gram Formula Mass (Molar Mass)" from that sheet.

4-13-16: We continued with CRWS 9.1. 2nd period students received a grade for on-time completion of CRWS 9.1 #1-13 that we discussed yesterday. Due to instructional delay (student behavior), 2nd period did not get to see the

"Prince Rupert's Drop" demonstration (See Reference Item #93). Those students can earn extra credit by writing one paragraph about Prince Rupert's drops before the time I choose to demonstrate it to them.

4-12-16: Students received CRWS 9.1 and we solved and discussed answers to #1-13. For 2nd period, I checked the sheets after #1&2 were answered to assure that everyone was on-task.

4-11-16: Students took the chapter 7 quiz, the last score to be entered into the term 3 grades.

4-8-16: I checked and graded the HW. As a matter of review, I told students which pages have example problem solutions for each type of the problems on Monday's quiz.

4-7-16: We reviewed the list of problems to be given on Monday's exam covering the calculations from chapter 7. We learned how to solve the last type of problem (determining molecular formula from having both empirical formula and molar mass - see text page 245 - we reviewed the problems on that page). 4-5-16: We learned how to calculate empirical formulas from % composition data. For HW students are to complete CRWS 8.3 #1-5.

4-4-16: I checked and reviewed HW. We began to learn how do determine empirical formulas from percent composition suing the examples and practice problems on page 242 and 243.

4-1-16: I checked the HW (CRWS 7.2) and reviewed any questions about the assignment. Answers are posted. I distributed CRWS 7.3 and we learned how to calculate percent composition. Students are to complete #11-15 on CRWS 7.3 for HW due Monday. The quiz will follow completion of all the calculations on CRWS 7.3. It will consist of nine problems formatted like the sample problems A-I in chapter 7.

3-31-16: We learned the calculation necessary to determine average atomic mass and a tabular method of determining molar mass. Students are to complete CRWS 7.2 (#1-8 complete with work shown) for HW. We also watched a new periodic table song/video (see link #59 via the reference tab on the left.

3-30-16: I reviewed the "Molar Masses" worksheet handed out yesterday and students received a grade for having it complete with calculations written out. Answers are posted.

3-29-16: We discussed the calculations from CRWS 7.1 Students received a reference sheet (some classes got this yesterday) to guide them in the factor unit method of performing the 7.1 calculations. Students were give an HW sheet on molar mass conversions (due tomorrow).

3-28-16: We reviewed problems from chapter 7 section 1. Students should be familiar with these calculations and complete CRWS 7.1 #1-10 for HW.

3-21-16: With reduced attendance, rather than continue lessons, we watched Neil Tyson's Cosmos (Episode 3) and students were given a question sheet to submit for extra credit at the end of the class period.

3-18-16: We continued using the factor unit method to solve problems like those on text pages 228, 229, 231, and 232. Students need to practice using their scientific calculators to solve these problems. Students who need help should search youtube and khan academy for "Molar conversions" and "how to use scientific notation on calculators". For HW, due after spring break, students should complete CRWS 7.1 (#1-10).

3-17-16: Students learned how to calculate molar mass and we reviewed the HW (all but period 2). 5th and 7th period received credit for grade for the HW . Chapter 8 exam grades are now posted.

3-16-16: Students were provided with a reference sheet containing calculation problems for chapter 7. I reviewed the use of Avogadro's number in problems illustrated by samples A & B on pages 228 and 229. For HW students are to complete CRWS 7.1 #1-5 showing the "factor-unit method" work as part of the solution as illustrated in class.

3-15-16: Students took the chapter 8 exam and were given an extra credit "March Madness" style puzzle on ions and solubility that is due upon return from spring break.

3-14-16: 2nd period did not meet due to the half-day schedule. 5th and 7th periods reviewed for tomorrow's exam covering chapter 8. We began our discussions with #48 from p295.

3-11-16: 2nd period attended Ms. James' fashion show, 5th period took the "No 'R'-word" pledge and we watched the two videos: (one on the explorations into subatomic particle physics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqAWqwh3Etw and the other on dark matter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kCtiOS_F_M#t=15.175045. 7th period reviewed the constructed response on silver recovery and were awarded grade for its completion. The exam on chapter 8 will be Tuesday and the key terms for chapters 7 & 9 will be due Wednesday.

3-10-16: We reviewed CRWS 8.4 and I demonstrated some aqueous double displacement reactions which we used to predict products (i.e. the spectator ions and solid precipitates). Some classes reviewed the "Silver Recovery" paper from yesterday and received a grade for its completion.

3-9-16: The chapter 8 exam will be Friday. Students received as credit toward grade a constructed response on "Silver recovery" by displacement reaction. I also demonstrate how solid silver is detected from plated silver using nitric acid.

3-8-16: We continued to learn about using the solubility tables to predict solid, precipitated products from aqueous double displacement reactions. Students were asked to solve problems on page 289 (#8 a, b, & e and #10 a c, & e).

3-7-16: 2nd and 7th period had an assembly, so the quiz is postponed another day. 5th period reviewed the classification HW listed 3-4. 5th period also took the activity series quiz.

3-4-16: HW finish CRWS 8.4 and classify each of the chemical reactions on the equation side of the worksheet handed out on 2/10 (30 equation WS). We identified the spectator ions from figures in the book on pages 286, 283, and 261. We discussed net ionic equations, total ionic equations, and precipitates and soluble ions. 7th period took the activity series quiz. Other classes will have the quiz on Monday.

3-3-16: Students solved and we reviewed #42-44 on page 294 (Note: the directions for problem #42 should read: "Predict the products of the following reactions. Classify then balance each reaction." Classes saw whichever of yesterday's demonstrations that were not shown. The activity series quiz will be tomorrow (postponed to Monday).

3-2-16: Students received more practice with the activity series and we solved #41 on page 294 and saw demonstrations of either thermite and/or aluminum with copper II chloride.

3-1-16: We reviewed and students received a grade for CRWS 8.3. There will be a quiz on these types of problems before the chapter 8 exam.

2-29-16: We reviewed use of the activity series to predict the products of single displacement reactions. We covered P282 practice problems 1-3.

2-25-16: 2nd period took the balancing equations quiz. We began discussing the activity series and examined the reaction illustrated on page 280. Students are to use the activity series, our discussion, and text pages 280-281 to solve Practice problems 1-3 on page 382

2-24-16: 5th and 7th period classes did not meet due to the half day schedule for report card conferences. 2nd period did not meet due to a special temporary revised class schedule.

2-23-16: 2nd period didn't meet due to half day schedule (report card conferences). 5th and 7th took a quiz on balancing chemical reactions. We also learned the format an names for 5 classifications of reactions (CRWS 8.3 #1-5)

2-22-16: Students were given CRWS 8.3 and 8.4. For HW they are to answer 8.3 #1-5 and match the five formats on the back of the sheet with their reaction types based on key term and text descriptions. I gave credit toward grade to all students who had at least 10 equations balanced on the 30 equation supplemental worksheet distributed 2-10. We reviewed any questions students had in preparation for a quiz during the next scheduled class.

2-19-16: We reviewed the HW. For HW students are asked to have any 10 equations balanced from the

30 equation supplemental worksheet distributed 2-10.

2-18-16: We explored the "phet" simualtions to further explore methods to balance chemical equations. We studied the "Poly-atomic ions as a group" method on page 271. For HW, students are to balance any 5 equations from the 30 equation supplemental worksheet distributed 2-10.

2-17-16: Same and plan from 2-16-17. Also included demonstrations with calcium carbide ("The rock that burns with water", and "The carbide cannon"). Students can now identify and balance combustion reactions.

2-16-16: Only 2nd period met due to the half day schedule. We continued with balancing equations from 269 & 271.

2-12-16: We practice balancing chemical equations like those described in the sample problems of text pages 269 and 271. For HW students are to identify then balance all the combustion equations on the balancing worksheet then work the practice problems from pages 269 and 271.

2-11-16: I reviewed the formulas for the word problems on the balancing equations worksheet and hung the answers (unbalanced equations). Students are expected to begin balancing equations beginning with the practice problems on page 269.

2-10-16: Today I checked the HW and awarded grade points for completion, but I did not yet review it. I handed out a sheet containing 30 chemical reaction equations. Students worked on writing formulas for each of the elements, compounds, and molecules listed in the word problems on that sheet.

2-9-16: For HW, students are asked to complete CRWS 8.1 #1-11. We discussed many of these in class. 2nd period completed the demonstration from yesterday. 7th period saw a demonstration of Silver Dendrites forming under a digital microscope as per the single displacement reaction illustrated on textbook page 280, figure 12.

2-8-16: We began chapter 8. I checked the HW (9 Key Term definitions from chapter 8) and students received a reference sheet (the concept review worksheet - "CRWS") for chapter 8 sections 1 and 2. Students were asked to complete CRWS 8.1 #1-5. We discussed chemical change, what a chemical reaction equation is and I began or completed a demonstration of the decomposition of water including tests for oxygen gas and hydrogen gas.

2-5-16: Continued Free Range Chemistry to completion or made up missing work. The exam will count for 20% of the term 2 grade. For additional EC, see item #48 on teh EC tab on the left (students can submit up to 5 Haiku poems for 1 point each as directed).

Students can prepare for the midterm by scanning the key terms for each chapter, reviewing their notes and reference packs for each chapter, then attempting and reviewing the relevant multiple choice questions that appear at the end of each chapter, the "standardized test prep". 1-28-16: We continue our review of CRWS 6.2; upon completion, we will have a quiz. Midterm exams are next week in accordance with the school-wide schedule.

1-27-16: We reviewed CRWS 6.2 #1-7 and the sample problem on page 202. We discussed the Lewis structures for binary molecules involving sing, double and triple bonds. For HW students are to complete Practice problems 1&2 from page 202 and #8-10 on CRWS 6.2. 7th period watched a Khan Academy video on Resonance structures. They are to complete the problems from pages 202, 203, and 205.

1-22-16: 2nd period did not meet. We continued with posted work from yesterday including CRWS 6.2 # 8 & 9 plus the sample problem on page 203.

1-21-16: Chapter 6 key terms were checked for periods 2 and 5. We began to discuss Lewis structures. Students were asked to solve CRWS 6.2 #1-7 (This is HW if not done in class as the "Do-Now") and to draw the Lewis structures for the period 3 elements using the table on page 200 (showing the period two element's Lewis Structures) as a guide.

1-20-16: Students were asked to examine pages 194-195 to answer questions #12-18 on CRWS 6.1. For HW students are to have CRWS 6.1 completed (#1-23).

1-19-16: Quiz grades were posted. Students received the reference pack for chapter 6. We defined the covalent bond and reviewed CRWS 6.1 #1-4. Key terms for chapter 6 will be due Thursday (except period 7, due today).

1-15-16: We reviewed the chapter 5 pack then had a quiz covering chapter 5. For HW, students are to write the key term definitions for chapter 6.

1-14-16: We continued the lessons from 1/5 that had been suspended due to keystone exams. I checked the HW from 1/5 and we reviewed each type of problem from 5.3 on the reference pack. For HW students to to have the chapter 5 pack complete in preparation from a quiz tomorrow.

1-13-16: 5th period had an introduction to stoichiometry and chemical reactions (Chapters 7-9) by conducting a demonstration of magnesium flash powder. We wrote the equation, balanced it, converted to weight ratios, then performed the reaction. 7th period continued the Atomic Cafe to the end. 2nd period did not meet.

11-12-16: 5th period watched "War games" to 33:00. 7th period continued "The Atomic Cafe" to 42:13. 2nd period did not meet.

1-5-16: I checked and reviewed the HW (for grade). I posted the answers. For HW students are to solve CRWS 5.3 #32-40 and 45-47.

1-4-15: Students were asked to review the rules for naming ionic compounds and as a "Do-Now" solve CRWS 5.3 #1-8. we reviewed these problems in class and continued with others on this sheet. 2nd period students earned graded credit for this work. For HW students are to have complete up to #31. I also read a few excerpts from the introduction to McCutcheon's "General Chemistry", copyright 1944, regarding the dissemination of technical knowledge thought the ages and the threat of loosing that knowledge.

12-23-15: 2nd period watched the first 35 minutes of "The Dark Crystal" (available on youtube). 5th completed Apollo 13, 7th played/watched dodgeball in the gym.

12-22-15: 2nd period elected to not watch Apollo 13 but rather play Kahoot. 5th and 7th continued the video whihc we expect to complete tomorrow.

12-21-15: We discussed the Apollo Program, the fire on Apollo 1, and began watching the film "Apollo 13". Students are permitted to make up missing work during the next three days or watch the film and submit the video worksheet for extra credit.

12-18-15: Only 2nd period met today with fewer students than normal due to half day schedule. Rather than proceed with new topics, we played Kahoot to enhance general knowledge. 5th and 7th did not meet.

12-17-15: I checked, graded and reviewed the HW. Those who had 5.1 complete received 80% grade for yesterday's HW if it was not produced yesterday.

12-16-15: We reviewed the HW for grade. Students are to complete the rest of CRWS 5.1 (#9-16) for HW

12-15-15: I reviewed the HW from last night. Students are to solve CRWS 5.1 #1-8 for HW.

12-14-15: We reviewed the HW. For HW tonight, students are to complete the constructed response and solve P180 #5-8.

12-11-15: Students were required (for grade) to label the ions listed on the "Common Ion Table" as "P" for polyatomic or "S" for simple. We reviewed this in class. Students are to complete part A on the constructed response titled "Formulas for Ionic Compounds". This was worksheet #1 from the substitute last week.

12-10-15: I reviewed some of the problems on the worksheets provided by the substitute covering naming and writing formulas for ionic compounds. Students are to continue to complete those sheets.

12-3 to 12-9/15: Students followed plans left with a substitute as I was bereaving the death of my mother. I will return 12/10 and review the progress made in my absence.

12-2-15: Most of the 2nd period students did not show today (many cuts) due to half day report card conference schedule. We played Kahoot. Term 2 grades are posted in the classroom. 5th and 7th periods did not meet.

12-1-15: Student were asked to write the 5 properties of ionic compounds as projected. I demonstrated each of them after discussion. In addition, 5th completed yesterday's video.

11-30-15: All classes received the reference sheet pack covering chapter 5. Due to student lack of preparedness (periods 2 and 5), the key terms for chapter 5 will be checked tomorrow. I introduced chemical bonding (ionic and covalent). Students watched "Chemical Bonds", #8 in the World of Chemistry Video series (See link #3 on the Reference tab on the left). A ten question worksheet was completed as the video played and was collected upon dismissal. 7th period produced the HW for grade (Key Terms for chapter 5) then completed the Giraffe video from Friday. 7th period and 5th period watching just the first portion of "Chemical Bonds" covering ionic bonds (~12min).

11-25-15: 2nd period did not meet due to the half day schedule. 5th period watched a tour of the space station (25 minute version) linked through Item 49 on the reference tab on the left. 7th period watched "Raw Anatomy - The Giraffe" to 45:00.

11-24-15: All classes took the chapter 4 exam. Extra credit essays are due by Monday. Key terms for chapter 5 are due Monday. An extra credit puzzle (the same one from 11/18) will be also counted as extra credit for this exam.

11-23-15: We reviewed for tomorrow's chapter 4 exam. Students discussed a few answers to the reference pack (all answers are posted). We played the on-line game "Kahoot" on topics covered by the exam (The Periodic Table).

11-20-15: Students performed the Mendeleev lab of 1869 for credit toward grade. 7th period also played "Kahoot". As a makeup assignment to the Mendeleev lab, students can submit Assignment #47 from the Assignments/EC tab on the left.

11-19-15: Students reviewed for the exam and took a quiz on the groups in the periodic table. 7th period also helped create and answer key for the puzzle handed out yesterday.

11-18-15: Students received and completed a word puzzle covering key terms for topics covered to date. They submitted it for grade.

11-17-15: Only 2nd period met today as 5th and 7th periods were covered by a substitute. 2nd period completed the Bill Nye video and submitted the worksheet as credit toward grade.

11-16-15: We reviewed some chapter 4 topics. I announced the exam for Tuesday next week. We discussed the term Cation and Anion. Key terms for chapter 5 and 6 are due upon return from the Thanksgiving holiday.

11-13-15: Students reviewed Part B of yesterday's constructed response assignment and place the finished paper in their portfolios. We continued watching the Bill Nye video. 2nd period to the Periodic Table, 5th to Radioactivity, and 7th to Plastics.

11-12-15: We continued our discussion of periodic table trends. Students received a constructed response paper titled "Periodic Table Trends" which we began in class, completing part A. Students are to complete part B for HW to be placed in portfolio folders. Students also assembled their in-class portfolio folders with a summary page then filed today's work into it for credit toward their 2nd term grade.

11-11-15: No school due to the Veteran's Day holiday.

11-10-15: We began a discussion of property trends on the periodic table. Students were asked to consider the trends illustration detailed in section 4.3 of their textbook. We discussed how atomic size influences Ionization energy and the other properties illustrated. 5th period students were given credit toward grade for displaying notes on the subject discussed. All students are asked to complete the chapter 4 reference sheet pack for homework, due Friday.

11-9-15: We reviewed our objectives for chapter 4, our study of the periodic table. Students should complete the reference sheets for the first 2 sections (CRWS 4.1 and 4.2) as discussed in class. Students should also label the 11 groups on the diagram copied onto the last page of the reference pack. We began to examine section 3, "Property Trends in the Periodic Table" by watching a 13 minute video titled "Ferocious Elements". 2nd and 7th periods finished the video, 5th period got to 7:57 of Ferocious elements. 2nd period was offered credit for grade for CRWS 4.1 and labeling of the groups in their reference pack.

11-6-15: We covered CRWS 4.1. Students are to complete CRWS 4.2.

11-5-15: All classes were asked to label the 11 groups (or families) identified on the periodic table. We discussed the properties of hydrogen, metals, non-metals, and semiconductors. A quiz on this will be given at a later date. 7th period saw the Thermite reaction demonstrated with old shotputs and aluminum foil. They also saw the conservation of energy demonstration with a swinging bowling ball.

11-4-15: Students received the reference sheet pack for chapter 4. They were asked to research and then we reviewed CRWS 4.1 #1-6 covering the historical development of the periodic table. I checked key terms for 7th period.

11-3-15: No class due to election day

11-2-15: 2nd and 5th period students used the text to solve p122 #2,3,4, covering the work of Newlands, Medeleev, and Mosley. In addition, 2nd period discussed the contributions to periodic development of Seaborg and Dobereiner for that class, I showed the reaction of Sodium metal. 5th period received credit toward their grade for completing the chapter 4 key terms. 7th period completed the Chapter 3 exam or other work as many were out Friday due to the kidney walk.

10-30-15: 2nd period saw two reactions of magnesium metal: one with oxygen and the other with carbon Dioxide. I also checked the chapter 4 key terms for credit toward grade. 5th and 6th period students took the chapter 3 exam.

10-29-15: Students received an essay on the life of Alfred Nobel, chemical engineer, and creator of the prize that bears his name. Students were required to complete four questions of the essay sheet and one additional question on a half sheet. Students were required to complete these writing during class time and submit the two sheets (stapled together) it as they leave the room in order to receive full credit.

10-28-15: 5th and 7th periods did not meet today due to the half day professional development schedule. 2nd period discussed the group 11 elements and began to discuss how the periodic table organizes elements according their properties. Students observed calcium metal, discussed calcium's presence in our lives, and witnessed a demonstration of the instability of calcium metal when mixed with water. We also discussed the properties of metals as we learned that metals appear in all but the right side of the periodic table.

10-27-15: 2nd period students took the the chapter 3 exam and were given and extra credit puzzle due Monday. During the exam I gave HW credit to those who showed a complete set of reference papers (Two stapled packs complete with isotope tables, marked up periodic tables, electron configurations of atoms 1-18, three configuration rules written in simple language, and a completed atomic theory timeline. Those who could not write Dalton's Atomic Theory from memory are required to hand write it five times and submit it for full credit toward that portion of the grade. Key term definitions for chapter 4 are due Monday. 5th and 7th periods will take the exam Friday. Those classes saw a demonstration of the Methane Mamba and we reviewed the required reference papers from chapter 3 that will count as homework grade points during the exam.

10-26-15: 2nd period: Chapter 3 exam will be tomorrow. We reviewed the chapter 3 reference sheets. Key terms for chapter 4 are due Friday. 5th and 7th periods: We reviewed the chapter 3 reference sheets. Key terms for chapter 4 are due Monday. The exam will be Friday. 7th period completed the "Electron Configuration with Pennies" activity for credit toward their grade.

10-23-15: 2nd period Class was disrupted by discussion of the fire alarm last period. All classes completed the atomic theory timeline after discussing the work of Chadwick and Gell-Man/Zweig. 5th period performed the "Electron Configuration with Pennies" activity for credit toward their grade.

10-22-15: 2nd period discussed atomic discovery, and reviewed electron configuration. Students in that class worked with partners to perform the electron configuration penny activity and received credit toward their grade upon successful completion. 5th and 7th periods did not (yet) perform this activity.

10-21-15: Discussed Mole day (And back to the future day). Students can make a mole for extra credit using the instructions provided on Assignments #31 (Tab on left. Ignore the due date on the assignment, due by end of term, 11/13). We solved Text page 99, #4-7. Students learned how to write electron configuration notation and diagrams. 7th period had the 10/19 HW checked for grade.

10-20-15: 2nd period students were given a two page pack covering electron configuration. For that class, I demonstrated how to draw Bohr diagrams, electron configuration notation for atoms, and electron configuration (structured level) diagrams. Students are to study the structured electron configuration diagrams for atoms 1-18 in the pack. I checked the HW for 5th period students. Both 5th and 7th periods reviewed electron configuration notation and structured level diagrams (like those on test page 98). All classes learned the terms: "Valence Electrons" and "Inert/Noble Gas closed shell electrons".

10-19-15: 2nd period discussed electron configuration and reviewed the SPDF orbital shapes and how they arrange around the nucleus. I checked HW (THe marked up periodic table) for credit toward grade. 5th and 7th periods began

discussing electron configuration and the SPDF orbitals. For HW, 5th and 7th period students are required to label the periodic table with the energy level and orbital cloud labels like on text page 119 (with corrections).

10-14-15: We looked at the spectrum tubes and discussed the types of light on the electromagnetic spectrum

10-13-15: Interim grades are posted in the classroom and will be entered on-line after the teacher submit deadline Friday. I will make adjustments as missing and new work is evaluated. The on-line interim grades will remain unchanged until the report card term grades are posted after November 18th. Today we began a discussion of color as it relates to the ways electrons configure themselves around the nucleus of an atom. We covered the electromagnetic spectrum (page 92), classifying 7 types of electromagnetic radiation in order of wavelength, frequency, and energy. For 2nd period I demonstrated the cathode ray tube and began to discuss the work of Thomson in 1897.

10-9-15: Students performed the "Isotope Activity" in small groups earning credit toward their grade while writing names and symbols for 10 isotopes as determined by counting colored beads that represented atomic parts in a bag (i.e. the nucleus). We also reviewed text P89, #4-6. Students are to complete the chapter 3 pack except for the atomic theory timeline. As an alternative to the isotope activity (for students who did not complete it), work through item #46 listed on the "Assignments/EC" tab on the left.

10-8-15: We discussed Isotopes and went over problems from the text (p 108 #39 and 45). We continued watching the Bill Nye Video.

10-7-15: We discussed the structure of the nucleus and how to write names and symbols for isotopes of atoms. Students were asked to complete #19 on CRWS 3.2 regarding isotopes of the first 5 atoms. Students are to continue their study by solving #4-6 on page 89 as homework (ungraded - but a quiz will cover this topic after our review). 10-6-15: I checked HW for period 2 (Dalton's 5 written once from page 78 on the chapter 2 worksheet pack). 2nd period class also watched the Bill Nye video (See blog entry 10/1) to 8:37. I offered extra credit, "Create 150 'elements' in the on-line game "Little Alchemy". You can up to 550 elements if you play the game to its fullest. 5th period watched just the introduction to the video. 7th period finished their exam from 9-30.

10-5-15: Grades from the exam and recent homework are posted. We completed the cryogenic demonstration. For HW, 2nd and fifth period must write "Dalton's five principles" on the front page of the first chapter 3 package.

10-2-15: Students handed in their density graphs. We had several demonstration involving dry ice and liquid nitrogen.

10-1-15: We began an introduction to atomic theory, chapter 3 and, for 2nd and 5th periods, I checked the HW (key terms) and we discussed Dalton's atomic theory. These two classes were also given the reference worksheet for the video "Bill Nye's Greatest Discoveries in Chemistry". This video can be found as item #27 listed on the "reference" page tab on the left side of this page. I handed out the video . We had a safety briefing regarding the cryogenic demonstrations tomorrow.

9-30-15: We had our unit 1 exam; Open notes. 2nd and 5th period classes were given an extra credit sheet after the exam, a blank periodic table and element list. Key terms for chapter 3 are due tomorrow. The Density graph is due on Friday. 7th periods exam was disrupted by a false fire alarm and will be rescheduled.

9-29-15: We will have our unit 1 exam tomorrow. Students can use their notebooks during the exam. Today we reviewed various uses of lab equipment and how to measure and calculate density. Students were given a piece of graph paper to create, for grade, a bar graph of the liquid a solid densities listed in Table 4 on text page 17. We reviewed the characteristics of these states of matter. We examined the data so as to qualify which materials needed to be included on the graph. We reviewed the qualities of a bar graph. Your graph is due by Friday and will be scored for each of the following attributes: Axis labels with numbers and units on the Y-axis, a graph title, scaled y-axis, all required substances represented by a bar, and neatness.

9-21-15: We reviewed the Metric Measurement conversions and conversions between the SI and English systems. The Unit 1 exam will be Tuesday September 29th covering the materials from class and chapters 1 & 2 from the text.

9-18-15: We reviewed the rules of using significant figures in measurements and unit conversions (calculations). Students received credit toward their grade for completing #1-14 on the math pack handed out yesterday covering this material. For extra credit, students can convert the speed limit on the sign above my desk into miles per hour using the factor unit method.

9-17-15: We explored accuracy and precision in measurements. Students were provided a three-sheet pack dealing with this topic plus scientific notation, metric measurements and unit conversion. We measured the density of two samples (graphite and lead) and examined their melting characteristics.

9-16-15: Students continued CRWS 1.3 and 2.1. I checked HW (Key Terms & CRWS 1.1 & 1.2) for grade. We examined the reaction of vinegar and baking soda, testing for the product of CO2 gas. We began to review the HW.

9-11-15: Students were given CRWS for 1.3 and 2.1 (chapter.section). Upon return to class after Wednesday, Key terms for chapter 1 and the CRWS for 1.1 and 1.2 will be checked for credit toward grade. We discussed the events of 9/11/2001.

9-10-15: We continued to explore the key terms and concepts from chapter 1. I detailed how I will grade the key term assignments for each chapter. For chapter 1, students are to have a separate, dictionary like, listing of the key term definitions for the chapter that include those listed on the projection board and the ones listed on textbook page 30. I showed the flaming textbook and we discussed the physical changes of dissolving and size reduction in addition to those shown in Figure 5 on text page 381. Students are tom complete CRWS 1.1 and 1.2. Classes who did not see the acetone/polystyrene foam dissolving demonstration on prior days, saw this today.

9-9-15: Students were provided with the Concept Review Worksheet for chapter 1 covering sections 1 & 2. Students were asked to complete section 1, #1-13 and continue working the sheet using the textbook. Students were also asked to create a separate section of their notes for key term definitions. Students were provided the following chapter 1 key terms to define: Chemical, Chemical Change, Physical Change, Matter, Gas Solid, Liquid, Plasma, Heat, Energy, and Kinetic Molecular Theory (KMT). We discussed KMT and absolute zero. Some classes were shown the chemical reaction equations (with examples and discussion) of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and the combustion of paraffin candle wax. For homework tonight (only tonight - no late credit offered), students are to login to schoolnet and check to see if they can get on-line access to the student textbook (Holt Chemistry). Students who email their results to me or write a note to drop in the box will receive credit for this assignment (i.e. [Name, Period] was [able to / unable to] see the textbook online). If you were unable to access the textbook on-line, state the specific error or provide a screen shot of your failed attempt.

9-8-15: First day of class. I hope you felt welcome and enthused about the subject. Students received a hard copy print of the syllabus to keep in their notebook and were assigned seats. Note: The syllabus is available in digital format as item #1 on the tab titled "Assignments /EC" on the left. If we entered into course topics, we discussed physical and chemical changes using acetone and polystyrene foam as examples. We discussed how everything in the universe is either matter or energy. If not, we will soon discuss these things. Your homework tonight is three fold: 1) Complete the two-part prompt handed out in class, 2) Assemble a 3-ring binder notebook with a dedicated section for Chemistry to include: Key Terms, notes, and handouts, and to visit this website to read the update I entered after 3:00 pm.
